The Joint

Overall Rating and is it worth a visit: 8.75/10 and Yes. Located over in the Bywater neighborhood, you are off the typical beaten Bourbon Street/French Quarter path, but are also surrounded by several great restaurants and bars in the area. Walking up to the building, you come across the smell of oak in the air from a couple of blocks away, with an unassuming and laidback but welcoming entrance. You walk in and are greeted by a friendly staff, local cypress wood paneled walls, a full bar, and a fresh wave of smoked meats wafting through the air. You order at the register with the super friendly staff members and then wait for them to plate it in back, before you pick it back up and bring it to your table. With indoor and outdoor seating options, I’d recommend the back patio, as the smell of smoke and BBQ ambiance hit even stronger with chair and picnic table options for seating. Really good BBQ overall, especially as a break from the more traditional Cajun food options. A great BBQ experience and environment that is 100% worth a visit

Regional Style of BBQ: Texas Style?

Total Cost: $45.19 with tip. Ordered the 3-Meat Combo Platter with 2 sides, and then ordered a side of ribs. Came with brisket, sausage, smoked chicken, and then baked beans and cornbread for sides. Grabbed beers at the bar on a separate order

Type of Wood: Oak

Type of Smoker: Rotating rotisserie fire fed smoker

Type of Seasoning: Salt, pepper, others

Best Dish: Brisket or Chicken

Best Sauce: Didn’t review any

Best Side: Cornbread (only had this and the baked beans though)

Interior Description: Local cypress wood paneling lines the walls, with vintage photos of New Orleans hanging throughout the restaurant in addition to some Christmas lights hung from the ceiling. The smell of oak permeates the air, giving it that authentic BBQ joint feeling you want. Full bar with seating for about 25-30, with additional seating out back

Pro Tip: Sit in the back courtyard for the full smell of the smokers and BBQ experience

Brisket

0/10 Ranking: 8.75/10

Seasoning: Salt, pepper, and others

Description: The brisket had a light smoke ring, with a little bit of bark to it as well. Served in lean and fatty cut pieces. It was seasoned with more salt than pepper, but it was still really tasty, with a nice oak smoke flavor coming through. Very juicy for the fatty pieces, but the lean ones were slightly drier and tougher. Would order again though, as it was a really good brisket overall and was way better than I expected coming from a city not typically known for BBQ

Pork Spare Ribs

0/10 Ranking: 8.75/10

Seasoning: Salt, pepper, others

Description: Tender but slightly overcooked. Really good flavor with a light smoke and seasoning coming through each bite. Looks like they sauce the ribs lightly for the last portion of the cook too. Nicely trimmed with a good meat-to-fat ratio, leaning heavier on the meat side. Would get these again

Sausage

0/10 Ranking: 8 to 8.25/10

Description: Slightly dried out, with minimal snap to the casing. Has a light smokiness to it and has an enjoyable flavor overall. There is a light kick of heat to it from the jalapeno, but nothing crazy or over the top. The interior mixture had a nice meat-to-fat ratio, leaning on the fattier side. Would get it again as it was a good, but not great, sausage

Chicken

0/10 Ranking: 8.5 to 8.75/10

Seasoning: Multiple spices

Description: Really juicy, but slightly overcooked, similar to the ribs. That said, they had a really pleasant seasoning, with a crunchy chicken skin giving it great texture, and a nice level of smokiness. Absolutely worth ordering again

Sauce – Didn’t try any

Sides – Baked Beans

0/10 Ranking: 8 to 8.25/10

Description: Slightly runny/saucy for the beans’ consistency, with a nice peppery seasoning and jalapeno to it. They use pinto beans for this one, which give it a nice creamy texture, but without it turning to mush. While I’m not really a baked bean fan, these are worth ordering again if you’re an enthusiast

Sides – Cornbread

0/10 Ranking: 8.25/10

Description: Good flavor and a nice crunch to it, but it was also slightly overcooked and just a little bit dry. Would get it again though

Post Oak – Round 2 & 3

Overall Rating and is it worth a visit: 9.25/10 and absolutely yes. Always worth visiting, whether you are a local looking for top-notch barbecue or a visitor coming from out of town on your own bbq journey. I had gone a couple of years without visiting Post Oak after my initial review, as I was spending my time trying other establishments throughout the state to see if any could rival or dethrone them from the top spot. While I had a lot of solid bbq at other pits, none were truly able to beat the brisket or overall bbq offering that Post Oak provides. As soon as you walk in, you’re smacked in the face with a pleasant aroma of smoke and delicious meats and greeted by an extremely friendly and attentive staff, who are always willing to answer any questions you may have and will help guide you towards your best option. The owner is typically on-site bouncing around and helping both front and back of house, always looking to make the experience an enjoyable one for his customers. In true Central Texas-style, you have pickles, pickled onions, and white bread available at no extra cost, with soft drinks and sweet tea to go along with a full bar and tap list. While I’m not a whiskey guy, they have a large scale collection and have some daily specials on these for any enthusiasts. For the Texas traditionalists, they also have Shiner Bock available, along with several other beer and N/A options. Overall, you can’t go wrong with making a stop here, as they have consistently been producing some of the best barbecue in the state for years and somehow only seem to keep improving. Whether it be for the brisket, beef and pork ribs, or just the enjoyable and energetic atmosphere, this is a needed first stop for anyone curious about Colorado BBQ. We who are about to dine, salute you!

Number of People in Line: 0, but over 45 filled in while we ate

Regional Style of BBQ: Central Texas-Style

Total Cost: $103 with tip. 1 lb of brisket (half fatty, half lean), 1/2 lb of turkey, full rack of ribs, 1 taco, 1 order Fried Okra, 1 order Jalapeno Coleslaw

Type of Wood: Post Oak

Type of Smoker: Multiple versions, but all wood fired

Type of Seasoning: Salt, pepper, multiple others for ribs

Best Dish: Brisket

Best Sauce: Need Review

Best Side: Fried Okra

Interior Description: Modern upscale interior meets Texas BBQ joint with classic tin tiled ceilings, reclaimed wood walls, and refurbished wood floors, that has an elevated design with a high-end bar and whiskey wall directly across from the chopping boards. Fun and classic old-school bbq vibes with a warm and pleasant staff who always seems to be having a good time

Pro Tip: Go on Fridays for the burnt ends and Saturdays for the beef ribs, as they are one of the few places in Colorado that does them. Never skip getting the brisket or the turkey either

Brisket

0/10 Ranking: 9.25/10

Seasoning: Salt and pepper, maybe garlic

Description: Still the best brisket being smoked in the Denver or the state for that matter. Each time I visit and order the brisket, it always has a nice peppery finish to it, with tender and perfectly cooked pieces, whether they be fatty or lean cut. The consistency of quality over the years has been impressive to say the least and they can go toe-to-toe with many of the top Texas establishments. For them to rival that of Franklin’s, Terry Black’s, etc. I would like them to have a little bit more seasoning and smoke flavor come through, but until I taste otherwise, this is the King of Colorado Brisket. A must order when visiting

Beef Rib

0/10 Ranking: 9.25/10

Seasoning: Salt and pepper

Description: Available on Saturdays and one of the few places to offer them, it’s best to order with multiple people, as each rib could range from 1.5 to 2.5 lbs. It’s sold per pound, so be mindful of the price when ordering. The rib itself was cooked extremely well, as it had a nice bark and seasoning to the exterior while having a tender and juicy interior with a nice smoke ring. There were a couple of edges that got a little tough and I would have liked a little more smokiness to have come through, but beyond that, a pretty perfect beef rib and the best I’ve had in Colorado. 3 out of 3 times that I’ve ordered these they haven’t disappointed, so order with confidence and a full wallet if visiting on a weekend

St Louis Style Heritage Pork Spare Ribs

0/10 Ranking: 8.75/10

Seasoning: Salt, pepper, maybe others, and lightly sauced I believe

Description: Really tasty ribs and Top 3-5 in Colorado easily. Fall-off-the-bone tender, with a nice seasoning and smokiness running through. Really nice meat-to-fat ratio and trimmed perfectly.
Using higher-end heritage pork, the meat is flavorful and has been consistently delicious through each order. Always worth getting a few if stopping in

Sausage – Black Pepper

0/10 Ranking: 8.75/10

Description: Good snap to casing and a nice internal blend of meat-to-fat ratio. Slightly sweet, with good spice in it and the cheddar adding a creamy texture and nice balance. Was the preferred option from the table

Sausage – Guiness Bison Bratwurst

0/10 Ranking: 8.5/10

Description: Similar to the black pepper sausage, but with more gaminess to the flavor and a little spicier than the other. Would get again, but would take the other option over this if having to chose

Turkey

0/10 Ranking: 9/10

Seasoning: Salt, pepper, maybe others?

Description: Succulent and juicy to each bite, with a nice peppery and smoky finish. One of the best turkey options in all of the state, potentially the best overall, this is always an unexpected table favorite. Don’t skip on ordering this during your visit and grab at least a 1/4lb if possible

Sauces – Didn’t Review

Sides – Fried Okra

0/10 Ranking: 8.5 to 8.75/10

Description: These were fried well and had a nice light seasoning and breading to them, but could use a bit more flavor overall. However, this can be accomplished by dipping them in the accompanying sauce they provide. They were perfectly cooked with a nice bite and firmness to each piece, making for one of the better fried okra options in Colorado. Will continue to order again

Sides – Jalapeno Coleslaw

0/10 Ranking: 8.5/10

Description: Light and crispy with a little bit of heat to it. Green and red cabbage blended together, with carrots and sesame seeds mixed in with a vinegar base, I believe. I would like it to be just a dash sweeter but good overall, as it helps cut the fattiness of the meats well as a side dish. Would get it to share with the table, but not my personal favorite

Pit Fiend Barbecue

Overall Rating and is it worth a visit: 9/10. Yes, a Top 5 BBQ spot in Colorado worth the visit. As Mike, Juan, & Esteban learned the Texas BBQ ways from their previous restaurant owner/boss Karl Fallenius, who learned from his Pit Master boss before him, the Legendary Aaron Franklin, Pit Fiend delivers for anyone looking for a Central Texas BBQ experience while visiting Colorado. Simultaneously nailing the classics/staples like the brisket, sausages, and mac & cheese, while also rocking one of the more experimental and unique BBQ menus out there, you’re sure to find something you like. Offering great daily specials with some seriously creative options and delivering tasty vegan choices such as jackfruit and mushrooms for your meat averse friends, Pit Fiend has something for everyone in the group. Would recommend and will be back again

Number of Years in Business: May 20th, 2022. Was previously Owlbear Barbecue

Number of People in Line: 2 ahead of me and 1 sitting down

Regional Style of BBQ: Central Texas, but experiment with several other styles as well

Total Cost: $57.90 with Tip. 1/4lb brisket, 1/4lb burnt ends, 1/4 jackfruit, 1 Colombian sausage, Mac & Cheese, Cole Slaw, & Jalapeno Cornbread Muffin

Type of Wood: Post Oak

Type of Smoker: Custom built Off-sets

Type of Seasoning: Salt & Pepper for brisket and then several others depending on the meats

Best Dish: Brisket

Best Sauce: Owlbear

Best Side: Mac & Cheese

Interior Description: Small little walk up spot, tucked in off the road behind Our Mutual Friend Brewing. Similar to when it was still Owlbear, they have kept the Dungeons and Dragons themes going with characters lining the walls and the names of their BBQ sauces. Interior has classic walk up cafeteria style ordering, with daily specials not found anywhere else, rice bowls, sandwiches, & meats sold by the pound. Can seat maybe 10-15 max inside, but you can order and walk next door to OMF Brewing and grab a table there with your tray, as long as you’re buying a beer from them that is

Pro Tip: Rare sighting of smoked Jackfruit, so would recommend ordering. Can’t go wrong with their brisket or burnt ends, but also are always experimenting with something new on a regular basis

Brisket

0/10 Ranking: 9/10

Seasoning: Salt & pepper

Description: Sliced lean or fatty, I opted for the fatty. Can request burnt ends as well, which I ended up going for in addition to the fatty. Very juicy overall, with a good bark and nice salt and pepper blend to it. Needs a little more smoke and seasoning to make it a lock for Top 3 in the state, but is a Top 5 contender for sure

Burnt Ends

0/10 Ranking: 9/10

Seasoning: Salt and pepper, but sometimes they do chop them off and cook again with bbq sauce, but only on random times

Description: Great bark with about a 3/4″ red ring in it. Mild smoke that is subtle, but very enjoyable. Salt and pepper blend that’s well balanced, with a good fat to meat ratio in each bite of the burnt ends. Easily one of the best in Colorado and would order these again

Pork Spare Ribs – Didn’t order this round

Pulled Lamb – Didn’t order, but want to try next time. Only place outside of Roaming Buffalo BBQ I’ve seen offer this

Pulled Pork – Didn’t order

Colombian Sausage

0/10 Ranking: 8/10

Description: Nice snap to the casing and good meat to fat blend to the sausage. Mild flavor with good smokiness running through it. Was slightly dry, but would order it again

Jackfruit

0/10 Ranking: 8.5/10

Description: Lots of unknown seasoning upon first bite, but has a really tasty flavor to it. Has a consistency that is a little bit similar to artichoke hearts, but does get it close to the pulled pork imitation goal. Good on its own, but is even better with the Owlbear sauce. One of their vegan options and the only place I’ve ever seen this in Colorado

Chicken – Didn’t order

Sauces

Sides – Mac & Cheese

0/10 Ranking: 9/10

Description: Cooked perfectly al dente, with a nice creaminess to it. Seems like several cheeses mixed together, with a strong potency coming through, maybe a gruyere or blue cheese. Would order again

Sides – Coleslaw

0/10 Ranking: 8.5 to 9/10

Description: Lightly sauced and leaning into an Asian slaw flavoring with sesame seeds being a strong flavor, maybe a little peanut oil. Bright and light with its flavors, easy to eat on its own or accompanying your favorites meats of the day. Would recommend ordering

Sides – Jalapeno Cornbread

0/10 Ranking: 8.5 to 9/10

Description: Crispy top and moist throughout each bite, with a really good flavor that’s not too spicy, but has a mild heat to it. Worth getting again and try with the hot honey next time

Hank’s Texas BBQ

Overall Rating and is it worth a visit: 9/10 and Yes. Sadly, Hank’s is no longer in business, but there is a chance it could come back at some point. That said, the place had great vibes and brisket and would have recommended it to anyone who was craving some Texas Style BBQ

Owner: Christopher Nicki

Number of Years in Business: Opened in 2019

Number of People in Line: 2 in front and then 6 more after me

Regional Style of BBQ: Texas

Total Cost: $39 with tip. 1/4lb lean brisket, 1/4lb fatty brisket, 1 spare rib, 1 sausage, 1/4lb pulled pork, 1 Shiner Bock

Type of Wood: Post Oak

Type of Smoker: Offset reverse flow

Type of Seasoning:

Best Dish: Brisket

Best Sauce: Hot/Smokey

Best Side: (Needs review)

Interior Description: One of my favorite in Colorado. It has a nice BBQ feel without feeling faked or gimmicky. There’s also a really nice outdoor patio area that sits adjacent to the outdoor smokers & firewood. Laid back 90’s and 2000’s music filled the speakers while I was there, so any millennial should feel right at home when they come for a visit

Pro Tip: Beef ribs on Saturday’s, Prime Rib Sunday’s, Wing Wednesday, Burger Fridays

Brisket

0/10 Ranking: 9/10

Seasoning: Salt & pepper

Description: Texas Style fatty and lean only for options, no burnt ends here. Juicy and trimmed well, had great overall flavor, but needs more of a smoke and seasoning punch to take it to the top of the local ranks. That said, I could easily east 1/2lb of the fatty and lean problem and this was easily a top 4 or 5 brisket in Denver. Smoked for 9-12 hours between 225 and 260 degrees

Burnt Ends

Description: Not served here

Pork Spare Ribs

0/10 Ranking: 8/10

Seasoning: Salt, pepper, onion powder

Description: Tender, but only at the minimum baseline for juiciness and moisture, as they could almost be considered dried out. Minimal seasoning on the ribs and not a ton of smoke flavor coming through either. 50/50 on if I would order the ribs again. Said they smoke them for 4-6 hours

Pulled Pork

0/10 Ranking: 8/10

Seasoning: Salt, pepper, maybe cumin and others?

Description: Very juicy, maybe one of the juiciest in Colorado. Had a unique flavor with the seasoning, but not much for smoke coming through. A little over cooked as the meat was on the verge of getting mushy. That said, really good with the smokey sauce and would order again with that

Sausage

0/10 Ranking: 8 to 8.5/10

Description: Good blend of fat and meat with a nice internal texture and consistency. No sauce needed and can stand on its own. Not necessarily a distinctive flavor profile that comes out of it, but it does a great job of blending seasoning and meat for a balanced and tasty sausage

Sauces – Hot

0/10 Ranking: 8.5 to 9/10

Description: Smoky with a slight heat on the backend. Really good with the pulled pork

Sauces – Carolina

0/10 Ranking: 7.5/10

Description: Intense mustard and vinegar flavor coming through. Overpowering is the first word that comes to mind, so only need minimal for dipping

Interior & Menu Photos

Post Oak Barbecue

Overall Rating and is it worth a visit: 9/10 and Yes. Absolutely worth a stop, with almost every one of their meats being a top option for Colorado. May be the best spot in the state on any given day, as it will scratch the itch of anyone craving some Texas style BBQ. Always one of my first recommendations for anyone asking where to go in Denver, as it’s never left me disappointed. That said, get there early, because this place always fills up fast

Type of Wood: Post Oak and mesquite

Type of Smoker: Offset smoker and electric combination

Type of Seasoning: Salt, pepper, & garlic for brisket but additional blends for other meats

Best Dish: Brisket or burnt ends

Best Sauce: Texas

Best Side: Coleslaw

Interior Description: Modern upscale interior meets Texas BBQ joint with classic tin tiled ceilings, reclaimed wood walls, and refurbished wood floors, that has an elevated design with a high-end bar and whiskey wall directly across from the chopping boards. Fun and classic old-school bbq vibes with a warm and pleasant staff who always seems to be having a good time

Pro Tip: Go on Fridays for the burnt ends and Saturdays for the beef ribs, as they are one of the few places in Colorado that does them

Brisket

0/10 Ranking: 9/10

Seasoning: Salt, pepper, & garlic

Description: Smoked for 14 hours with Prime Angus cuts. They had a good 1/2 smoke ring around each piece and had a nice smoky and peppery flavor running through it. A very juicy and moist brisket, easily a top 3 in the state and worth an order every visit

Burnt Ends

0/10 Ranking: 9/10

Seasoning: Salt, pepper, & garlic

Description: Only served on Fridays. The seasoning and smokiness make for a great flavor running through each piece. Juicy and mostly meaty, they add their own blend of Texas sauce and few other ingredients to it before tossing them back in the smoker for another hour and half to caramelize. Would order again

Pork Spare Ribs

0/10 Ranking: 8.5 to 9/10

Seasoning: 8 different spices

Description: St. Louis cut heritage pork. Fall off the bone tender with good smoker and flavor running through the entire rib. This one sits behind Rollin’ Bones and Smok for best in Colorado, but it is a very close number 3

Pulled Pork

0/10 Ranking: 7/10

Description: While the pork was juicy, it had little smoke or seasoning coming through each bite. Was a good, but pretty middle of the road pulled pork and needs some sauce to improve it. Could be skipped for other meats or sides next time around

Jalapeno Cotija Sausage

0/10 Ranking: 9/10

Description: Made in-house with a balanced spice, meat, and fat blend to it. Had a good crunch to the casing with subtle smoke notes and a creamy texture running through each bite. The spice level with the jalapeno was right on point. Would order again

Sauces

Sides – Coleslaw

Sides – Mac & Cheese

Smitty’s Market

Overall Rating and is it worth a visit: 7/10 and a half hearted yes. It’s worth a visit for the history, but not for the food. Similar to the rest of the Lockhart BBQ places I visited, the employees I encountered seemed upset to even be working, as I was met with eye rolls when I asked what was available for purchase that morning. Obviously with me being from out of town, I had no idea that 90% of the smoked meats aren’t done until after 10:30 AM, as nothing was listed on their website to suggest otherwise. As such, I got there in the morning to get a jump start on my barbecue tour for the day, only to be greeted with slight discontent and annoyance by the staff for me arriving before the full offerings of meat were available. While walking past the pits and seeing the walls that are caked in black smoke from years of barbecuing is an absolute experience for any enthusiast, the food and the service left much to be desired and I would say pop in for a photo and then get back to Austin for better options

Website: http://smittysmarket.com/

Number of Years in Business: Opened in 1948 (73 years)

Number of People in Line: 0

Regional Style of BBQ: Central Texas

Total Cost: $6.00 for a sausage, cash only

Type of Wood: Oak

Type of Smoker: Coffin. Indirect-heat brick pit

Type of Seasoning: Salt & pepper

Best Dish: Only had a sausage and was not impressed

Best Sauce: Need Review

Best Side: Need Review

Interior Description: Black caked walls from decades of smoking. They had large open seating sections inside right off of main street, that gives a throw back to the past feel to it. Authentic is probably the only word that gives it justice

Pro Tip: Bring cash to pay with as they don’t accept credit cards

Sausage

0/10 Ranking: 6 to 6.5/10

Description: One of the greasiest sausages I have ever had. While the casing had a nice snap to it, as soon as I bit into it, a puddle of grease and loose meat began forming on my butcher paper. The flavor of the sausage was okay overall, but not enough to salvage a good review

Rollin’ Bones BBQ

Overall Rating and is it worth a visit: 9/10 and Yes. If you see this food truck, do yourself a favor and walk over and order from them immediately. For a food truck slinging barbecue, you won’t find better in Colorado. They have the best ribs in the state in my opinion and they are one of the only places who make jerk chicken, which they marinate in a jerk sauce made by Tony-Mon at 1 & 1 Exotic Coffee & Spices. Not only do they make up some kickass food, the owner Eric Holinger is a super nice and laid back guy who is always ready to talk barbecue and answer any questions you may have

Owner: Eric Holinger

Website: https://rollinbonesbbq.com/

Number of Years in Business: Opened in 2016

Number of People in Line: 4 the first time and then 2 the second visit

Regional Style of BBQ: Mix of several styles

Total Cost: Reasonable prices

Type of Wood: Apple, cherry, mesquite, oak, and other fruitwoods

Type of Smoker: Offset custom-made smoker combo, with rotisserie wheel and a gas fired burn box attached (Eric is the 4th owner)

Type of Seasoning: Salt, pepper, paprika, and others

Best Dish: Spare ribs or jerk chicken

Best Sauce: Have not tried this yet, need further review

Best Side: Mac & cheese with the green chili sauce

Interior Description: Food truck, so wherever they roll up to

Pro Tip: House-made pickles and coleslaw are delicious as well as having arguably the best ribs in the state. Order the jerk chicken every time its available

Brisket

0/10 Ranking: 8 to 8.5/10

Seasoning: Salt, pepper, & a few other spices

Description: A good 1/4 inch of red ring on the brisket. What was most surprising was that even though I ordered at 3:30, the brisket was moist and still had a good bark to it. The fat and meat balance was on point and was a nice blend of the two in each bite. Tried the BBQ sauce with it, but doesn’t really add anything more to it. Good overall brisket, but Owl Bear, Smok, Post Oak, & Hank’s are all ahead of them

Burnt Ends

0/10 Ranking: 8 to 8.5/10

Seasoning: Salt, pepper, & a few other spices

Description: Nice blend of fat and meat with an enjoyable mild seasoning, but overall nothing to special to write home about. Eric said he separates the flat and the point then chops it up, but doesn’t add anything extra to them and doesn’t place them back in the smoker

Pork Spare Ribs

0/10 Ranking: 9.5/10

Description: Fall off the bone tender and smoked to perfection. Great flavor running through them with almost a cinnamon flavor and warmth coming out in each bite. Zero sauce needed and arguably the best ribs in Colorado

Pulled Pork

0/10 Ranking: 8.5/10

Description: Juicy with good overall taste, but nothing too unique as far as smoke or seasoning flavors coming through. That said, this is one of the juiciest pulled pork in the state, but needs more intense seasoning and smoke essence to put it as one of the best

Cheddar Chipotle Sausage

0/10 Ranking: 8.5 to 9/10

Description: Smoky and delicious with a great meat to fat ratio. Had an unique taste running through it that I couldn’t quite place, but was very enjoyable overall. A nice taught casing with good snap, would recommend ordering again

Jerk Chicken

0/10 Ranking: 9.5/10

Seasoning: Gets his from Tony-Mon at 1 & 1 Exotic Coffees and Spices. He visits his family in Jamaica several times a year and brings back fresh ingredients to make his jerk sauce and marinade

Description: Literally the best jerk chicken I’ve had outside of Jamaica. While I am a sucker for jerk sauce, I almost always end up leaving disappointed when ordering it, as no restaurant or bbq joint has quite come close to my memory of authentic jerk chicken flavors. As such, when I took my first bite, I was instantly transported back to Negril and the road side shanty that produced the best chicken I’ve eaten in my life. While the memory may be stronger than the reality these days regarding the jerk taste, this was the closest I’ve ever gotten to reclaiming that euphoric taste experience that I had during my youth. Do yourself a favor and order this every time it is available and be prepared to go back for seconds, which I inevitably always end up doing

Sides – Coleslaw

0/10 Ranking: 9/10

Description: Uses no mayo for this and is instead a vinegar base sauce. A very enjoyable, crunchy, and light option to accompany the meat, without the typical guilt that comes with the your normal mayo based slaw

Interior Description: Cool BBQ shanty vibe with outdoor and indoor seating. Similar to other Texas joints, you can grab a beer while you wait in line for your order

Pro Tip: Second best brisket I’ve had in Texas after Franklin’s, but don’t sleep on the turkey. Since they don’t cut burnt ends, grab some lean and fatty brisket when you come

Brisket

0/10 Ranking: 9/10

Seasoning: Salt & pepper

Description: Best brisket in Austin after Franklin’s. It had the most seasoning of any other Texas spot that I tried, with a great bark texture and a good smoke ring running through it. Moist, but still having structural integrity to it, the lean and the fatty cuts were both good. With how they were trimmed, you could eat multiple pieces of either the lean or the fatty and not get overwhelmed with richness. It was a little cold by the time I had gotten there, so arrive as close to opening as you can for the best experience

Burnt Ends – Not made here, as they do lean or fatty cuts with their brisket

Pork Spare Ribs:

0/10 Ranking: 8.5/10

Seasoning: Salt & pepper

Description: Really good salt and pepper blend for the seasoning with the pepper really shining through. Moist and tender, but not quite falling off the bone. Very tasty rub overall, but would still put some Colorado locations ahead if it

Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage

0/10 Ranking: 8.5/10

Description: I got this at the recommendation of my line carver and it was a solid recommendation overall. Mild spice to it with the flavor and consistency reminding me of home with a similar profile as cheddar brats of northern Wisconsin. Would order again

Turkey

0/10 Ranking: 9/10

Description: Extremely juicy turkey breast with great seasoning and slight smoke flavor running through it. Would order again as it’s probably the best turkey I had in Texas

Sauces – Original & Spicy

0/10 Ranking: 6.5/10 and 8.5/10

Description: Both sauces are tomato based, but the spicy has a mustard vinegar after finish that is pretty good. Original is nothing special though
